Birmingham track 65m Janko but loan move for Pavlyuchenko in doubt

Jan 14, 2010

Birmingham manager Alex McLeish is considering a fresh approach for Red Bull Salzburg striker Marc Janko.
McLeish has hit a few brick walls with moves for Liverpool's Ryan Babel, Sunderland's Kenwyne Jones, Schalke's Kevin Kuranyi and Hugo Rodallega at Wigan, but the Scot has been alerted to the fact that Janko is available for £6.5million.

Salzburg had warned clubs that they would not consider offers until the summer unless those clubs were competing in the Champions League but, aware of Janko's desire to play in the English top flight, they have relented and will consider letting him go now as long as their valuation is matched.

Janko has scored 67 goals in 92 games for Salzburg and has a one in two record for Austria. At 6ft 5in, he has been easy to spot for Europe's top scouts but the main concern has been the standard of Austria's league.
However, his price represents decent value and at 26 that will only increase if he proves a success in the Barclays Premier League.
McLeish has monitored the Austrian for more than a year and knows there will be pressure for success on any striker he brings in with Carson Yeung's money.
McLeish is also interested in a loan deal for Tottenham's Roman Pavlyuchenko but Harry Redknapp would prefer to sell unless the Russian is still on their books come the last day of the transfer window.
Birmingham winger Gary McSheffrey is being chased by Hull City and S heffield United.
